OzHarvest is the first perishable food rescue organisation in Australia that collects quality excess food from more than 2,000 commercial outlets and delivers it, direct and free of charge, to more than 800 charities.
Last week, Wiley’s Managing Director, Tom, spent the morning on the road with OzHarvest’s Robbie, collecting perishable food from local Aldi’s stores and dropping the recovered food to charities.
Tom and Robbie picked up over 330kg of food from the Redcliffe area in around four hours. The stores donated bread, fresh produce and meat for OzHarvest to distribute. There was plenty of bananas, oranges, peaches and bread loaves. Meat was scarcer to come by, as were dairy products.
There were even some red and pink gerbera flowers and coincidentally it was Valentine’s Day! Tom made the day for a few ladies at one of the local charities.
Tom said “it is always eye opening to see how much food goes to waste each day. Food that could be going to people who really need it. I love working with OzHarvest to bring together charities with local businesses who donate the food. My biggest passions are bringing people and food together in a better way AND feeding the world, together with OzHarvest I can play a role in that.”
OzHarvest work tirelessly to save perishable food and distribute it to local charities. One of the charities Tom visited put on meals for around 60 people five times per week and another makes food boxes to take off site and prepare.
Wiley and Tom are raising much needed funds for OzHarvest through the upcoming CEO Cook Off. Participants at the CEO CookOff help provide delicious meals to 1,100 vulnerable, disadvantaged or homeless Australians. Funds raised support OzHarvest’s work feeding Australia’s homeless and disadvantaged, and also responding to the critical food wastage issues facing society.
