Wiley has been exploring the AUSPACK Packaging and Processing Expo this week in Sydney. Renowned for showcasing processing and packaging innovations of the top suppliers, AUSPACK has the largest display of working machinery for food, beverage and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Wiley’s process engineer, Heath Barker reports back on his top three finds from the event.
1. | My first great find was at Kuka Robotics. Their ‘food’ robot, a hygienic Agilus, is specially designed for the food industry. The white robot is already operating in wash-down environments, handling smallgoods products such as sausages.

2. | My second find was an award-winning safeguarding system by Axelent Automation and Safety. The system has a custom tool to easily remove panels for maintenance which saves precious time during breakdowns and also means easy installation. Check it out my video: |
3. | I spent a good deal of time with SMC looking at their prototypes. I can’t share photos, but can tell you that the future looks good for applications looking to save on size and weight. I saw pneumatic cylinders that are 20% shorter and 30%+ lighter than their current models, with the same stroke length and strength. This is particularly useful for robotics where the payloads are improved by reducing weight and length. SMC also showed me their anti-static offerings which is something I wouldn’t have thought they would offer. This is particularly useful for dealing with static on plastic bags and can also help with reducing static shocks. |
